The Weekly Shift

SHIFTY FAITHFUL:

You know what time it is. For this week’s roundup we have a slew of tracks that are sure to please any musical pallet. Without further ado, let’s jump right into this week’s first selection…

Over the last 5 years, Los Angeles native Steve Ellison aka Flying Lotus, has branded his signature sound and introduced it to a global audience, implementing him as one of the cities key musical figures. Having hardly been praised for putting LA based Odd Future on the scene via his curated night at Low End Theory about two years ago, FlyLo is the kind of musician that takes pleasure in the pure art of creating, and he has created something unique once again. Breaking away from his signature offbeat style, the beat maker teamed up with OF’s Earl Sweatshirt and the unknown Captain Murphy (believed to be the new side moniker of Odd Future leader, Tyler The Creator) to construct a beat only intricate enough to fit the style of the two young MC’s. Going a step and above, only as Flying Lotus would, the producer employed his good friend Thundercat to lay down some bass licks on a purely instrumental version. Two for one from a soon to be legendary group of musicians. Check out the vocal version via Adult Swim by clicking HERE, and enjoy the instrumental featuring Thundercat courtesy of FlyLo’s Soundcloud below…

The third selection comes to us from Edinburgh based producer Unicorn Kid, who’s 2011 EP “Tidal Rave” literally made waves in the Electronic music scene worldwide. His latest work is a remix of a BloodDiamonds produced track featuring up and coming Canadian singer Grimes, titled “Phone Sex”. The track immediately begins with Unicorn Kid’s signature bouncy synth and takes you on a magical hike through nostalgia with Grimes as your tour guide. Click play, close your eyes, and think outside the box…

Few words can be used to describe the next one. This is the latest work of New York based, budding producer, Baauer. It’s a remix of the Flosstradamus track “Rollup”, which samples the track they made with Danny Brown, titled “From The Back“. It goes really, really, hard. COUGH COUGH…

The last track is a Surkin remix of the Summer anthem “Bad Girls” by M.I.A. The Parisian based, French house producer has developed a style similar to many of his fellow countrymen who make similar kinds of music, but adds a certain type of flare to his tracks that makes them easily distinguishable from the rest. With a funky rhythm and reworked car alarm sample that will get any spine wiggling, Surkin turns the already catchy tune into one fit for any dancefloor, worldwide…

Stay Shifty,
