MVM: Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank)

Posted 06 August 2012 | Post

K-Dot just released the music video for his latest single “Swimming Pools (Drank)” last week, and has already racked up a collective 3 million views on this sucker.  No doubt in my mind that Kendrick is hip-hop’s fastest rising star right now.  If any of you have been around me since he first released the stream on his soundcloud a few weeks ago, you know this is one of my favorite songs right now.  This shift is genius.  The music video also acts as a great compliment to the sounds, helping to get Kendrick’s message across in an even clearer light.  This is a party song, this is something you can bump in the club, but as much as it feels like a careless “lose your head” tune, Lamar’s message is serious here.  A random fan commented on the youtube, and said it pretty well:

Even though Kendrick is now mainstream his music still has a message. He not saying get drunk…he’s talking bout how society is now. People drink so much that they start to lose themselves. They might struggle with what the voices in their head tell them. The swimming is like people going under…hitting rock bottom. Most of Kendrick’s music has a message, you just have to listen and pay attention to the analogy
