Fellow Pacific Northwest native, Macklemore has blown up bigger than I could have ever imagined since first hearing about him in early 2011. Its so nice to see a truly positive MC succeeding in an industry that is littered with “swag” rappers and people arguing over who has the biggest chain, most expensive watch, or who gets the most bitches. Macklemore is very aware of all of this, and often likes to poke fun at it. His latest single, Thrift Shop, is perhaps his best joke yet, and probably 2x as good in video form. Disregard anything good or bad about the song, the fact that Macklemore is saying its cool to shop in the Thrift Store is exactly the type of message kids need to be hearing again. I’ve always been of the same mind. Why spend $50 on a designer shirt when you can get something just as unique from a Thrift Shop for $1??? A question I’ve never been able to answer. Finally someone’s going public about the issue. If the lyrical content and style weren’t already enough, Ryan Lewis puts the icing on the cake by laying down an extremely catchy beat to compliment it all. This is the full package, ladies and gents, and it makes me very excited for the future of hip-hop. You don’t have to sacrifice your morals or individuality for success, and Macklemore is living proof.
